Reading is one of the basic skills necessary for effective learning. Studies have shown that early intervention with struggling students is essential to their academic success in later years. Students who participate in K-8 remedial education are less likely to receive failing scores and repeat grades, have better academic motivation, lower incidences of absenteeism, better attitudes toward school and better self esteem. Bainbridge Schools Foundation understands that by correcting learning problems early, remedial education can set in motion a chain of events that improves a child's learning ability through high school and beyond.
Recently Bainbridge Schools District saw a reduction in the Federal Title 1 allocations it receives for its remediation programs. In the past five years, Title 1 funding for BISD has decreased by 30%. The state covers some of the federal funding decrease but the district’s limited general budget must fund the remainder. The number of students who require remedial education to become successful learners and meet state academic standards is increasing. Given the potential for additional decreases in government funding, it is critical that the district maintain its high-quality remediation program. Since 2005, Bainbridge Schools Foundation has raised funds from the public to help maintain the excellent delivery of this program.
